Final push for playoffs: Number of NHL teams facing injury scares to key players-NHL News
The regular season of the National Hockey League (NHL) is almost in its third quarter and a number of teams around the league have started suffering injury scares.
Key players or any players injured do not bode well into any of the teams' hopes of making it the playoffs, as they find it difficult to replace some of their key players, especially when the players’ trade season has crossed the deadline, February 27, 2012.
A brief review of the teams’ roster revealed that almost all the teams are going through a rough patch maintaining a hundred per cent fit squad.
Some of them have been shortlisted below.
Ottawa Senators, goaltender, Craig Anderson:
Craig Anderson cut his finger while preparing food at home a week ago, and is still out of the squad. He remains uncertain for at least another week, but the stipulated recovery time can be little longer, which could affect the team’s run towards the playoffs.
Dallas Stars’ captain, Brenden Morrow:
Morrow has missed 14 straight games since suffering some unknown neck and back problems early in February this year. The player joined the team for practice on Thursday, March 01, 2012, skating on his own for the first time. Yet he is unsure to return to
the side for the next couple of weeks.
Philadelphia Flyers’ winger, James van Riemsdyk:
James van Riemsdyk broke his left foot while blocking a shot during the game against New York Islanders. This development came as another setback for the player, as he had already been in and out of the squad for a number of injuries during the current NHL
season.
Chicago Blackhawks’ centre, Jonathan Toews:
As of the latest, Jonathan Toews is reported to have been progressing well in the recovery from a concussion, but will not be travelling with the team on the three-game road trip to Ottawa.
Pittsburgh Penguins’ defenseman, Kris Letang:
Letang was knocked down on the ice as a result of a furious hit from Dallas Stars’ winger, Eric Nystrom, in the game on Wednesday, February 29, and is yet to recover from it. Lucky for Nystrom, he has successfully escaped the possibility of a disciplinary
action from the NHL.
New York Rangers’ captain, Ryan Callahan:
Callahan missed his first game of the season on Thursday, March 01, 2012 due to the injury of bruised foot. He is expected to be out of the side for Friday (March 02, 2012) game and might have to sit out even little longer, waiting for full recovery.
Detroit Red Wings’ captain, Nicklas Lidstrom:
Lidstrom is expected to miss all the weekends’ games after injuring his ankle in the game against Colorado Avalanche. A puck hit on the ankle has forced him out of the side for the next few days. He is expected back to the team next week.
