Final-quarter aggression leads New York Jets against Washington Redskins 34-19 – NFL Week 13 Recap
For the starting three quarters, no one knew what would happen. But in the final quarter, a dramatic game-play by New York Jets left no doubts in predicting the result as Washington Redskins were crushed 34-19 at the FedEx Field
in the week 13 encounter of the National Football League current season on Sunday.
In the last quarter, Jets managed 21 points much to the dismay of Redskins’ coach Mike Shanahan.
"It's frustrating," he said. "I'm just disappointed in the way we finished...It's hard to win the football game when you finish like we did."
Redskins entered the game after snapping a six-game losing streak by beating Seattle Seahawks last week. They started this game strongly as well, but failed to handle the pressure at the end of the game.
Roy Helu managed a two-yard run to get the first touchdown of the game, putting Redskins in front 7-0. Shonn Greene ran for one-yard near the end of the first quarter to equalise the score 7-7.
With scores levelled, both the teams started the second quarter hoping to dominate each other. Redskins scored first when Graham Gano managed a 33-yard field goal. After around eight minutes, Nick Folk scored a 45-yard field goal
for Jets. With less than a minute remaining in the quarter, Graham scored another field goal, this time from 23 yards, to once again put Redskins in-charge. The halftime score settled at 13-10.
The third quarter was a tough one for both the sides, which tried a number of times to make a scoring move. Eventually, it was Nick Folk, who scored a 51-yard field goal for Jets to take the score to 13-13. The quarter ended with
the scores tied.
The final quarter witnessed Redskins’ slump and an extraordinary game-play by Jets. For the half of the quarter, things remained poised. Redskins disturbed the equilibrium and took the lead 16-13 after a 46-yard field goal by Graham
Gano.
So far so good for Redskins! The misery started in the last five minutes of the game, and continued until the end.
At 4:49, Mark Sanchez sent a 30-yard pass to Santonio Holmes, who scored a touchdown and grabbed the lead 20-16. After almost a minute, Shonn Greene was allowed a nine-yard run and another touchdown increased the Jets’ lead to
27-16.
Redskins tried to retaliate, but a field goal from 43 yards by Graham Gano could not help their cause and reduced the deficit only by three points. During the last two minutes, when Jets were leading with 27-19, Shonn Greene managed
another touchdown by rushing for 25 yards to strike final nail in the coffin. The final score settled at 34-19.
“It’s extra disappointing,” Redskins’ tackle Barry Cofield said. “Especially defensively, we played well for three-and-a-half quarters. A lot of things hurt with the way we finished. We have a lot to learn from and need to get
ready for next week. Nobody is going to feel sorry for us.”
