Olympique de Marseille need to return to winning ways if they really want to finish in a good position which could ease their financial burdens to some extent
Last night, recently crowned Coupe de la Ligue champions, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127, drew 1-1 against Caen. As things stand, Les Phoceens are in 10th place in Ligue 1 standings which means that the club will struggle for a top table finish which
is certainly not something the club’s fans are accustomed to.
Chasing their first Ligue 1 win since January 29, the Rhone giants have shown slight improvement in recent games but once again, failed to register a win against relegation-threatened Caen who also had chances to win the game.
Didier Deschamps knows that the club is finding it hard to win games and says that players are under stress.
“We did not do quite well. There were technical errors, poor choices, but the implication was there. the situation is stressful for the players.”
Versatile Spanish full-back, Cesar Azpilicueta also echoes his manager’s sentiments and admits that he and his teammates really don’t know what has gone wrong for them.
“Eleven league games without victory, frankly, that’s a lot. We would love to know what’s wrong. Everytime we concede a goal and don’t score, it becomes complicated,” laments that Spaniard for who the 1-0 win in the Coupe de la Ligue  final over Olympique
Lyonnais is past.
A few months back, Marseille president, Vincent Labrune said that a fifth-place finish was the minimum requirement for the club in order to somehow balance the account books. However, Les Phoceens are far away from that target and even if they do return
to winning ways, it will be too late. The 2011/2012 campaign is certainly a mixed one for fans.
In cup competitions, Les Phoceens have done quite well but they have failed to replicate those performances in the domestic league. Furthermore, running low on confidence has also dealt a major blow to the club’s future.
A host of players are now likely to leave Stade Velodrome in order to play at a club that offers them the chance of playing in Europe consistently.
