The runner-up team of Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship in 2009 staged a stellar performance and left everyone behind in the competition. They started off the campaign in Pool C, where teams from Kazakhstan, North Korean and India accompanied them. China
played three matches in a preliminary round robin and built an excellent 3-0 record. The brilliant performance of Chinese squad at preliminaries proved to be a jumpstart for team and they kept on making shocking waves.
In the second round, China was placed in Pool E along with hosts Chinese Taipei, North Korea and Iran. None of the pool members could stop China from making to the top and once again China made a clean sweep in the group. Success in first two round of the
championship enabled China to play at the quarter-finals.
Team China remained remarkably consistent and showed a strong will to get hold of the title trophy. China dished out the semi-final slot after beating Vietnam in straight sets. Up till the semis, China did not lose a single set. Semi-finalist competitor
South Korea was the first team to snatch one set from China. However, it was not something which could hold China back. Chinese women finished the match 3-1 and settled for the final encounter with Japan.
The match with Japan was the final test of Chinese Women’s spike and block capabilities. Japanese tried different tactics but managed to secure only one set in the match. China got its hands on the title trophy by finishing the match in four sets. The winning
team secured 12th title at the Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship.
Japan, which struggled for their 4th gold-medal, ended up in runner-up’s position and emerged as the silver-medallist team. They tied their record of winning te most number of silver-medals with South Korea by seizing a 6th silver-medal
victory.
South Korea put up a great show of volleyball and settled for third position, while defending champion Thailand failed to perform up-to-mark and could only finish in fourth slot. Likewise, host Chinese Taipei could not profit the home advantage and claimed
5th position on the ranking chart.
