The final ranking of the 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship was revealed after the successful completion of exciting event on Sunday, August 21. A total of sixteen teams were on board to contest their skills in front of an international audience in
the Turkish capital city of Ankara and the campaign lasted for 10 days. Brazil and Serbia entered the competition labelled as the two top teams of the tournament. They finished as 1st and 2nd position holders in the previous edition of
the championship in 2009.
At the end of the tournament, teams settled down in following manner:
Turkey (Gold medal) China (Silver medal) Serbia (Bronze medal) Poland – 4th Germany – 5th Brazil Japan Argentina United States Slovakia Italy Mexico Thailand Egypt Puerto Rico Algeria
The world saw new champions this year as Turkey replaced Brazil in the top seat. Brazil could not defend the title and ended up in the sixth slot. Turkey immensely benefitted from the home advantage and climbed up the top slot. Previously, the 2nd
place finish in 2007 was the highest achievement for Turkey at the FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship.
This time around, they created a perfect opportunity for the home crowd to celebrate a gold-medal victory. The Turks remained successful throughout the tournament and they demonstrated a stellar performance in the first round and remained unbeaten. World
Champions China were the only team which sent Turkey to defeat in the second round. However, that was the only set-back Turkish team suffered in the whole campaign. They immediately bounced back and won all of their remaining matches. The Chinese team, which
was regarded as three time world champions, settled for second slot after losing to Turkey in the final match.
Serbia and Poland staged a great fight for the bronze medal. Seria, who were the silver medalists from the 2009 FIVB Youth World Championship, could not give an up to the mark performance and failed to improve their position on the ranking chart. However,
they successfully captured the bronze after beating Poland in the final match.
Defending champions Brazil displayed a shaky performance throughout. They opened the tournament in the perfect manner but lost balance in the second round. Brazil lost two crucial matches of the second round and dropped the chance to play in the semi-finals.
Germany gave some tough competition to Brazil in the last match of the tournament and displaced Brazil from the first-five teams of the championship. Brazil had to be content with a 6th position at the 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship.
