Final round highlights of Honda Classic – Golf update
Rory Sabbatini has won the $5.6 million Honda Classic on Sunday at the par-70 Champion Course. Here is a quick look at the leader board at the end of the tournament.
Sabbatini carded an even-par on Sunday after making two birdies followed up by two bogeys on the wind ridden course. He surged into victory owing to his scores which is netted on Friday and Saturday. The South African was ranked second in putts per round
with an average of 27.
He was chased by the veteran golfer Y.E Yang. Yang, who defeated Tiger Woods in the PGA Championship in 2009 carved a beautiful 66 with a single blemish. In addition to that, he was ranked first in birdie average as he reeled 16 birdies against the wind
and rain. The 39-year-old enjoyed the finish and said, “Overall, it was a very - for me, it was a very good week and it's been a very good early part of the season.”
Jerry Kelly who was the third round leader finished two strokes shy of the winner. The American opened the tournament with a 71 but bought it down to a sizzling 67 by the end of the 500 FedEx-event. He was followed by two more Americans in the fourth and
the fifth spot. Ricky Barnes scored 67, while Tommy Gainey compiled a 68 in the 72-hole session.
A four-way tie was seen at the sixth spot of the leader board, which included world number four, Graeme McDowell, and Ryder Cup rookie Jeff Overton. McDowell successfully completed a finish in the top ten by the end of the second round. The Northern Irishman
expressed confidence in his game and said that he expected a good standing at the end of the day. McDowell matched the course lowest score record set by Luke Donald in 2008. The player earned two points in the front and four in the back to prove his prowess
on American soil.
Meanwhile, Donald finished a stroke behind him at one-under par. Donald produced a blemish-free scorecard with four birdies to take the tenth spot alongside Stuart Appleby.
The player who was honoured with, ‘Shot of the month award’ finished 17th. Matt Kuchar failed to take advantage of the home course and wrapped the four-day session at one-over par.
World number two, Lee Westwood, had a terrible time on the course throughout the event and proved that his game is unsuitable to American-style courses. The Englishman drafted three rounds in the 70s and ranked T1 in bogey average.
His compatriot, Ian Poulter, did not fair much better. The winner of the Shark Shootout remained out of par for all the four rounds. On the other hand, his Ryder Cup mate, Eduardo Molinari scored 8-over and finished in a tie for the 51st spot.
Rory McIlroy who had been in the news for mocking Tiger Woods finished fifth in double-bogey stats. The Northern Irish was seen struggling with his putters, while his long game showed immense improvement.
This is it for the Sunday leader board, which showed the world leaders faltering and rookies rising.
