The final session on the last day of the 2011 New Zealand Swimming Championship has concluded in Auckland. The championship also serves as a platform for the national swimmers to defend their national titles and qualify for the New Zealand swimming team
to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The session featured the finals rounds of the Men’s and Women’s events including the 1500m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m backstroke, 400m Individual Medley and the 4*200m freestyle relay.
The session started with the Men’s 1500m freestyle, where Aquabladz Taranaki Swim Club’s Dylan Dunlop Barrett dominated the event with his beautiful swim of 15:48.72 minutes. Barrett’s swim placed him comfortably ahead of Swim Rotorua’s Kane Radford and
Waterhole Swimming Club Inc’s Michael Mincham, who earned the silver medal and the bronze medal with a timing of 15:50.64 and 15:50.69 minutes, respectively.
The next event was the Men’s 100m butterfly, which was dominated by Roskill Swimming Club’s Corney Swanepoel, who earned the gold medal by clocking a time of 54.11 seconds. Two of North Shore Swimming’s pupils Daniel Bell and Andrew McMillan, followed him
on the podium for the silver medal and the bronze medal in a time of 54.34 and 54.42 seconds, respectively.
After a few moments, Melissa Ingram of North Shore Swimming occupied the gold medal in the Women’s 200m backstroke and qualified for China with a timing of 2:10.33 minutes. She was followed by Aqua Gym’s Sophia Batchelor and North Shore’s Penelope Marshall,
