Final rounds on third day of the 2011 New Zealand Swimming Championship – Recap
The third day of the 2011 New Zealand Swimming Championship has concluded in Auckland with the addition of four more swimmers into the national team for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, in July.
The championship serves as a dual platform, providing national champions with a chance to defend their titles and also selecting swimmers for the World Championships.
The second session of the day three started with the final of Men’s 50m breast-stroke, where the results were almost same as the 100m breast-stroke of the first day. The winner of the 100m breast-stroke event, North Shore Swimming’s Glenn Snyders once again
demonstrated his dynamic swim in the 50m event. Snyders won the title for the event with his miraculous 28.11 seconds that bordered very close to the national record.
He was followed by the 100m breast-stroke silver medallist and his team-member, Nicholas Ferrif, in a time of 28.72 seconds while Howick Pakuranga’s Jeffrey Arona Tuifana’e earned the bronze medal in 28.98 seconds. The event faced a neck-to-neck fight between
the top six swimmers in the race.
In the Men’s 200m butterfly final, Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club’s Velimir Stjepanovic retained his top qualification spot in the race and earned a gold medal in 1:59.55 minutes. Stjepanovic’s timing was considerably under the FINA time qualification standards,
so he confirmed his spot for China in July.
North Shore Swimming’s Andrew McMillan moved up to the second spot for the silver medal in a time of 2:00.46 minutes and qualified for the Shanghai Championships.  McMillan was followed by his team-member Shaun Burnett, who touched the wall in 2:02.44 minutes
for the bronze medal.
In the Women’s 200m freestyle final, Lauren Boyle once again dominated the freestyle event in a time of 1:58.74 minutes. She was followed by Capital Swim Club’s Tash Hind and Motueka Swimming Club’s Amaka Gessler, who touched the wall for the second and
third spot in a time of 2:00.04 and 2:00.75 minutes, respectively. With her victory in the event, Boyle remained the only swimmer to post a time of less than 2:00.00 minutes.
In the Women’s 400m medley relay, North Shore Swimming earned the gold medal in a time of 4:16.75 minutes that was considerably ahead of the Capital Swim Club and Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club, who climbed the podium for the second and third position in 4:21.61
and 4:24.79 minutes, respectively.
The last final of the day was the Men’s 400m medley relay, where the statistics remained almost the same. North Shore once again dominated the event with their 3:44.02 minutes timing and were followed by Capital Swim Club and Laser Mt Eden, who secured the
second and third spot in a time of 3:52.11 and 3:55.56 minutes, respectively.
The championship will conclude on April 8, with the completion of the New Zealand Swimming team for Shanghai.
