Final session of 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship - Day six
2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship completed its’ day six after the second session at the Newton Park Pool in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
The session included the finals of 50m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m breast-stroke, 400m Individual Medley and 1500m freestyle for the Men and Women of the Senior and Youth categories.
The session started with the Senior Men’s 50m freestyle, where the Gideon Louw earned the gold medal in a FINA B-Time Qualification Criteria. He clocked a wonderful time of 22.55 seconds to out-touch his closest rival Roland Schoeman,
who followed him on the podium in 22.61 seconds. They both were followed by CGA-CG’s Graeme Moore, who reported in 23.00 seconds.
In the Senior Women’s 200m butterfly, Bianca Meyer of KZNA-KZ conquered the title by touching the wall in 2:13.82 minutes ahead of the Mandy Loots and Vanessa Mohr, who touched the wall for second and third in 2:14.39 and 2:14.70
minutes.
The equivalent event in the Youth Women’s category was won by Michelle Weber of KZNA-KZ, who posted a time of 2:21.99 minutes. Kaleigh Graham reached the podium for the silver medal, clocking a time of 2:24.18 seconds while EP-EP’s
Michael Barnes secured the third spot on the podium in 2:25.08 minutes.
In the Senior Men’s 200m breast-stroke, Neil Versfeld surfaced as the first swimmer of the session to clock a FINA qualified time of 2:11.38 minutes and confirmed his spot for 2011 World Championships in Shanghai. He was followed
by Rory Buck and Christopher Cowley, who earned the silver and bronze medal in 2:15.88 and 2:19.27 minutes.
In the youth category, James Lawson met the crowd’s expectations by earning the gold medal in a time of 2:23.97 minutes. Mar Husselman and Daniel Marsden followed him on the podium for the second and third position, clocking 2:24.11
and 2:25.14 minutes respectively.
Moments later, Kathryn Meaklim dominated the 400m IM by touching the wall in a time of 4:42.15. WPA-WP’s Wendy Trott and NTS-NT’s Jessica Pengelly climbed the podium for silver and bronze medal in 4:46.39 and 4:49.71 minutes respectively.
Then, Michelle Weber once again occupied the top of podium in the Youth 400m IM. She produced an amazing swim of 5:02.52 minutes and left behind Lindsay McLeod and Macfarlane. McLeod remained only 0.05 seconds away and clocked 5:02.57
minutes ahead of the Macfarlane, who posted 5:06.10 minutes.
Last event of the championship was the Men’s 1500m freestyle, where Heerden Herman improved 14 seconds of his qualification time to earn the gold medal. Herman posted a time of 15:14.24 minutes and was followed by Myles Brown and
Mark Randall in 15:23.76 and 15:25.00 minutes.
The championship concluded after the final day whereas the South African Team to Shanghai World Championships will be finalised from these results.
