Final session of the 2011 Telstra Australian Swimming Championship – Swimming News
Last session on eighth day of the 2011 Telstra Australian Swimming Championship concluded with the dominating performance of Leiston Pickett, Stephanie Rice and Olivia Halicek in their respective events.
The championship is a trial basis of Australian swimmers to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The session included the finals of the Women’s 50m breast-stroke, 50m freestyle, and 400m Individual Medley along with the finals of the Men’s 400m IM, 50m backstroke and the 1500m freestyle.
The session initiated with the Women’s 50m breast-stroke, where Southport’s Leiston Pickett occupied the gold medal with a stupendous 30.24 seconds effort. Her time was only 0.44 seconds higher than the world record of 29.80 seconds. Nunawading’s Leisel
Jones followed her on the podium for the silver medal with a timing of 31.13 seconds. Melbourne’s Natasha Waitzer climbed the podium for the bronze medal in 31.36 seconds, ahead of Nunawading’s Sarah Katsoulis, who touched the wall in 31.45 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 400m IM, where the arena sighted Miami’s Fraser Holmes displaying an astounding swim to earn the gold medal in a time of 4:16.75 minutes. St Peters Wester’s Mitch Larkin earned the silver medal in 4:17.52 minutes, while Liverpool’s Daniel
Tranter and Nunawading’s Travis Nederpelt touched the wall third with a same time of 4:21.22 minutes.
In the Women’s 50m freestyle final, Olivia Halicek dominated her swim to conquer the gold medal in a superb time of 24.88 seconds. She finished ahead of defending champion, Peters Wester’s Yolane Kukla and Melbourne’s Sophie Edington, who touched the wall
for the second and third spot in a time of 24.92 and 25.05 seconds, respectively.
Moments later, Ashley Delaney presented a beautiful swim in the Men’s 50m backstroke final. Nunawading’s Delaney out-touched former champion, Unattached’s Hayden Stoeckel in a time of 25.52 seconds against Hayden’s 25.54 seconds. Aquaburn’s Dani Arnamnart
followed them on the podium for the bronze medal in a timing of 25.97 seconds.
In the Men’s 1500m freestyle, Hunter’s Jarrod Killey won the gold medal in 15:18.85 seconds, ahead of the Unattached’s Wally Eggleton and Lawnton Swim’s Trent Grimsey, who earned the silver and bronze medal in a time of 15:19.13 and 15:23.55 minutes, respectively.
The last event of the session was the Women’s 400m IM, where the crowd’s favourite, Stephanie Rice of Peters Wester’s clocked 4:38.61 seconds for the gold medal. She was followed by Kawana Waters’s Samantha Hamill and City of Perth’s Blair Evans, who touched
the wall to secure the second and third place in 4:40.43 and 4:40.86 minutes, respectively.
