Final standings of the FIVB World Grand Prix unveiled – Volleyball News
The women’s premier international volleyball tournament, the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix, completed its run on Sunday, July 1.
Following the successful completion of the final phase of the competition, the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) unveiled the standings of the participating teams. A total of sixteen teams from all across the globe competed at the 20th edition of FIVB World Grand Prix. The tournament started off on June 8 and completed its first leg on June 24.
In the next run, top-six teams of the competition entered the Final Round. The prelims of the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix were hosted by various countries, while Chinese city Ningbo provided the backdrop for the Final Round matches from June 27 to July 1. The spectators witnessed the wonderful action of volleyball, whereas the participating teams competed for the title trophy.
Finally, the teams settled down in following order:
United States
Brazil
Turkey
Thailand
China
Cuba
Germany
Poland
Japan
Italy
Serbia
Dominican Republic
Puerto Rico
South Korea
Argentina
Chinese Taipei
US team entered the competition as two-time defending champion. The team had the support of experienced coach Hugh McCutcheon, who set a direction for his team and led the USA to third straight victory in the World Grand Prix. US team remained remarkably consistent in the opening round of the tournament and finished the prelims with an impeccable 9-0 record.
Likewise, the American musketeers continued with success in the Final Round of the competition and finished off the campaign without any loss. US team played a total of five matches in the Final Round and achieved 5-0 record. On account of such flawless performance, US team deserved to hold the title trophy of the competition.
Brazil followed the American squad and settled for the second position in the tournament. Brazilian women suffered the loss of one match in the prelims and also dropped one match in the Final Round.
Turkey was behind China in the opening phase of the tournament, but worked its position up during the Final Round. Ultimately, Turkey got hold of third position in the tournament.
