  1. I'm not sure why you'd need a working model before starting a project.  Isn't the purpose of the project to take an idea, and create a working model from it?

    Here are some ideas:

Build a receiver for weather satellite images.

Build a robot that can find a candle in a maze, and extinguish it safely.

Build a HDTV to NTSC set-top converter, so old TVs can be used with the digital format when the analog format goes off the air in the next year or two, depending on locale.

You didn't specify whether this was college (3 year diploma) or university (4 / 5 year degree) ... so I'm assuming university.

A college level project might be to build hardware and software interface so that a GPS with a serial port output could send info to a PDA with an infrared port only.

  2. Try cold fusion.

  3. Without knowing the requirements of the project, or the scope of the classes involved, it would be difficult to offer suggestions with real merit to them.

One suggestion, from my own experience in a PLC class, is traffic signals.  Start with the basic 4-way intersection, and then, depending on how "deluxe" you want to go with it, you could add left-turn signals, walk/don't walk signals, road sensors that affect timing of the lights, or even make things more complicated by setting up multiple interlinked intersections.  (Did you ever notice a series of lights where if you made the first light, you would make them all?)

    Good luck!
