Finally ‘Lotus Racing’ ready to change its name
The chief designer of Lotus Racing, Mike Gascoyne is surprised by the behaviour of the Lotus Car Company which he says is far from his understanding.
While talking to reporters earlier today, Gascoyne said that it seemed as though Group Lotus wishes to develop its own motorsport instead of getting tied up with the current Lotus team. He sarcastically added that they probably want to come up with something
as big as Formula 1, rather than linking up with his team.
The past couple of months have seen a serious dispute between Lotus Racing, the current Formula One team and Group Lotus, the car manufacturers. The battle started between the two earlier this year as the Lotus team boss, Tony Fernandes proclaimed that he
hoped to continue with the same team name in the upcoming season as well. However, the news was negatively received by the owner of the Lotus Group who claimed to own all the rights of the name. The group further announced that they would go to any extent
to prevent the team from using this team name in the future.
While talking about the issue, Gascoyne said that he is completely unable to understand the situation. After having brawled for a number of months Fernandes and Gascoyne are now considering coming up with a new name for the team.
On the other hand, Group Lotus is speculated to be linking up with the Renault F1 team as their title sponsor.
Gascoyne is of the view that Lotus Racing, has done pretty well in their debut season. He also expressed his belief in the team by saying that it has a long way to go. The car designer was convinced that there were many good reasons why the car company should
have backed the existing racing team if it wishes to be a part of the auto racing world.
While talking to the media earlier this week he said, "At the end of the day, we brought the Lotus name back into Formula 1 and we've done a great job. We don't really understand why Group Lotus don't want to support us in doing that job for them.”
Gascoyne concluded by saying, "We've brought great value to the brand and the [Lotus Racing] shareholders invested something like £80 million into the brand and the development of the team, and we fail to understand why Group Lotus seem to want to try to
kick us out."
