Finals of the 2011 Telkom South Africa Youth National Championships - Day two
Second session on day two of the 2011 Telkom South Africa Youth National Championships has concluded in Newton Park Pool, Port Elizabeth.
The championship will conclude on April 16 and provides a chance to junior swimmers to qualify for the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The session included the finals of the Men’s 50m butterfly, 100m breast-stroke and 200m freestyle along with the Women’s 100m freestyle and the 100m back-stroke.
The session started with the Men’s 50m butterfly final, where Reynard Wessels of Fsa-FS’s reached the podium for the gold medal in a time of 25.11 seconds but failed to breach the FINA time qualification criteria of 23.73 seconds for the Shanghai Championships.
He was followed by NTS-NT’s Ryan Coetzee and CGA-CG’s Dylan MacMillan, who climbed the podium for the silver and bronze medal in a time of 25.76 and 25.79 seconds, respectively.
ZIM-ZZ’s James Lawson dominated the Men’s 100m breast-stroke final with a stupendous 1:05.21 effort. KZNA-KZ’s Daniel Marsden and CA-CG’s Fa Ruszczynski pursued him into the finals with a timing of 1:05.58 and 1:05.90 minutes, respectively.
Next was the Women’s 100m freestyle final, where Natasha DE Vos of NTS-NT transpired as the fastest swimmer with her magnificent swim of 58.44 seconds. 18-year-old, DE Vos, cruised her way to the top of the podium ahead of the BOR-BO’s Marne Erasmus and
KZNA-KZ’s Lindsay McLeod, who reached the podium for the silver and bronze medal in a time of 59.57 and 59.63 seconds, respectively.
Later, the 2010 Commonwealth Games champion, Chad Le Clos, displayed an astounding swim of 1:49.64 minutes to earn the gold medal for the Men’s 200m freestyle. With his magnificent timing, he remained only one second away from the A qualification criteria
but posted a time under the B time criteria. Le Clos, who has already booked his spot for Shanghai in the Men’s 200m butterfly, was followed by NTS-NT’s Frank Greeff and WPA-WP’s Danie DU Marais in a time of 1:54.37 and 1:55.18 minutes, respectively.
The last event of the session was the Women’s 100m back-stroke, where Amy N Peens claimed the gold medal in a miraculous time of 1:05.67 minutes. Her timing was far ahead of the FINA time qualification standard of 1:01.70 minutes for the World Championships,
but provided her the crown of the 100m back-stroke event. EP-EP’S Tammy T Price and Fsa-FS’s Juan DU Plessis followed her on the podium for the silver and bronze medal in a time of 1:06.84 and 1:07.28 minutes, respectively.
The day concluded without the selection of any junior swimmer in the South African swimming team to compete at the 2011 World Championships.
