  1. The money automatically goes to the school, the school then decides whether to send the remainder to you or to send it back to the lender.

With the loans being subsidized and unsubsidized the best answer is to not borrower what you don't need.  subsidized loans start accruing interest when you are in repayment.  The government only allows so much in subsidized loans, some don't even qualify for them since it is based on income.

A school will not try to "sucker" a person into getting unsubsidized loans because they don't benefit from it, they are trying to help you get into school and most people need both, and some people even more loans than the unsubsidized & subsidized put together.

  2. Some schools won't issue you money until after you have been in class for a few weeks.  Contact your school and find out when you will get your money.

  3. You should call your school's registrar. Listen, Do not accept any 'unsubsidized' student loans. Only accept subsidized loans. Unsubsidized student loans begin to accrue interest the day you deposit the check into your bank account. Your financial aid advisor may try to 'sucker' you into accepting unsubsidized student loans, but don't listen to them. Only accept 'subsidized' loans and then pay the difference for your tuition and books out of your own pocket. You will be happier after you graduate and you have to begin paying on your loans. I have just given you at least $10,000 worth of free advice.  Take it and roll with it.

  4. It will go directly to the school they take their share and then pay you with a check or Direct Deposit.  My daughter goes to check in at her dorm the 21st and gets direct deposit the 22nd or they said they start depositing then anyway.  Last 2 years she went to community college and didn't get her share for 2 or 3 wks after classes started.  She only applied for help through her FAFSA.  No private student loans with high interest.  Any More Details?  Private college or State, etc?
