  1. If I'm reading you correctly...

    R > S > T?

    RS = 7a

    RS = 28

    So: 28 = 7a

    28/7 = a = 4

    Then...

    ST = 12a

    ST = 12(4) = 48

    Find the common factor, S, to solve for R and T. S can't be 'a' because it wouldn't satisfy R > S > T.

    A possible solution (judging from the nature of this problem- I think it has many):

    Let's see if S = 6, works...

    RS = 28

    R = 28/6 = 14/3 = 4.66...

    ST = 48

    T = 48/6 = 8

    14/3 < 6 < 8

    Does the answer have to be a whole number?

  2. R--7a--S--12a--T

    RS=28=7a

    a=4

    ST=12*a=12*4=48

  3. ----------

    (RS=7a) ST=12a, RS=28

    ----------

  4. RS=7a=28

    a=28/7=4

    ST=12a=48
