  1. The letter n represents the counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

    Plug each one in for n and solve...that will give you the term.

    an=n^2-1

    a(1)=(1)^2-1 = 1 - 1 = 0

    a(2)=(2)^2-1 = 4 - 1 = 3

    a(3)=(3)^2-1 = 9 - 1 = 8

    a(4)=(4)^2-1 = 16 - 1 = 15

    a(5)=(5)^2-1 = 25 - 1 = 24

    0, 3, 8, 15, 24.
