  1. Leverage is proportional to the respective "lengths" involved:

    In this case: 1/4 and 1 - 1/4 = 3/4

    Leverage is 3/4 to 1/4 equals 3 to 1...

    Applying 1 pound-force on the long side will "balance" a 3 pound-force on the short side.
