IF you want to do the perfect thing for your child, sign him up for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  BJJ has AMAZING programs for kids.  They are fun, they build confidence, and are all around a great self defence system.  If you are not sure about what art is best for self defense, look up the EArly ultimate fighting championship fights.  It shows why BJJ is the best choice.

Really, you won't go wrong with BJJ.  IF possible, try and find a reputable black belt to teach him.  All Gracie Barra schools are excelent, and there are located in many countries.  If you can find a Gracie Jiu jitsu school, a Machado Jiu Jitsu school, or whatever else, that works too.

Try http://www.jiujitsuforums.com and ask around, they will tell you what the best place to put your kid is.
