Hi-

I'm a US citizen and I'm planning on attending graduate school in Dublin in a year. How would I go about finding a furnished apartment? Any brokers you know of? I also have a dog.

  1. If you know anyone living here, ask them to look in the Classified section of the Evening Herald.

You'll probably have to reimburse them for phone-calls and the cost of the newspapers!

    Good luck.

  2. I am in the same boat as you. I do not know where you are at here in the States but in my area in Tennessee they have been building apartments like crazy, but cannot fill them due to the economy.

Well, guess what?! The same thing has happened in Dublin. I was in Dublin and lived there from mid-April to mid-May. I leave to move there in April. There are tons of apartments which have not been filled that are brand new around Trinity and the University. Many options, but they will cost you.

Some of these you can get furnished, some accepts dogs. Note about dogs: I really hope that you have already started the process of getting your dog ready to ship, as it will take six months to twelve months to have him ready to go legally. Surprise! That is something that they do not tell you very often.

There are many breeds which are not allowed in Ireland as well. Make sure that your dog is not included on that list. Otherwise he might be having to stay at home anyways.

I am going to vet school there, so I will be there for five years. I stayed in a place called Dalkey which is amazing when I was there two months ago. Southern Dublin is MUCH NICER and SAFER than Northern Dublin.

There are several housing brokers which serve all of the area since I have been looking at houses, some of them are (you will have to go to their site in order to get their email and number). Remember that they are five to 9 hours ahead of us depending on where you are at. Email tends to be a better way at dealing with all business things there.

http://www.lisney.com/ They have offices all over the place

http://www.irishtimes.com/ This is the link for the Irish Newspaper

they do have a craigslist for Ireland as well for the Dublin area although they have not really learned how to use it like we have.

http://www.accommodationlettings.ie/ specialize in dublin residential lettings

http://www.viviun.com/AD-1617/ this is the best apartments that you could ever ask for. Close to the DART to take you anywhere in Dublin, states that it is $5000 USD per YEAR (and FULLY Furnished). WOW! In town very friendly for dogs, and has a pet store there, but do not know if apartment accepts dogs. Very close to Bono's place too and lots of great food!

Here is a general agent listing database with the cities included:

I know that this sounds really weird but many of the restaurants and businesses there have apartments over the top of them, especially in Dalkey. You might try searching classifieds for some of them.

It is very pricey there. Make that EXTREMELY pricey. You are going to spend upwards of 800 to 1000 euros a month for an apartment (furnished typically) which is going to be $1200 to $1600 US. That is pretty high compared to what things go for here unless you are in a major town.

Also cost of living such as food is much higher. You need to plan on at least 60 euro a day to eat out, and if you are frugal and can survive on college food, you can get by on about 30 euros a day with eating at home. You are going to be spending quite a bit of money while you are there unless the currency rate changes back into favor of the American dollar. Which I hope that it does before I get back there in 8 months.

Good luck at finding an apartment, if you need help feel free to ask questions. I talk to people there everyday.
