Question:

Finding equation mistakes ?

The question says find the mistakes in the following equations and write them out correctly...but i can work out whats wrong! I know they are already balanced so im guessing its something to do with the state symbols, but i dont know how to work out what they should be - can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks

Na(s) + H2O(l) ---> NaOH(aq) + H (g)

CaOH2(aq) + 2HCL(aq) ---> CaCl2(aq) + 2H2O(l)

  1. THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER...

    2 Na (s)+ 2H2O(l) >> 2 NaOH (aq)+ H2 (g)

    Ca(OH)2 (aq)+ 2 HCl (aq)>> CaCl2 (aq)+ 2 H2O (l)

    GOOD LUCKS

  2. 2 Na (s)+ 2H2O(l) >> 2 NaOH (aq)+ H2 (g)

    Ca(OH)2 (aq)+ 2 HCl (aq)>> CaCl2 (aq)+ 2 H2O (l)

  3. Na has a valency of 1 so it is

    Na2 + 2H2O --> 2NaOH + H2 (hydrogen also has a valency of 1) State symbols are fine

    CaOH2 + 2HCl --> CaCl2 + 2H2O seems OK to me.

  4. In the first one, Hydrogen is diatomic, which means it should be 1/2 H2 at the end. Alternatively, it could just be H2, and then you put a 2 in front of all the others.

    In the second equation, it should be Ca(OH)2, since otherwise it would appear to be only 2 hydrogens instead of the 2 hydroxide ions it really is.
