found info on GGGG Grandfather starting when he arrived in the US. He arrived in Phila. Pa. Set. 13, 1749 on ship "Christian" that sailed from Rotterdam, Holland thru Cowes, England and I know all passengers where from Wirtemberg, Alsace or Zweybrecht. Can someone give some advice on where to look for more info and possibly find earlier info on him. I am at a standstill and no idea where to go next. Thanks!

  1. maybe "myheritage.com" can help

  2. As long as you know the names of his children, it should not be totally impossible. Try Familysearch.com.

  3. I think you meant ancestor ( vs descendant) .

  4. Alot of time the ship's passenger log says where they are from.  From there you could go to the church records in the area and see if you could find a baptism or marriage record.

If he was Dutch, then look into genealogical societies in the areas where the Dutch congregated or settled.

Albany and the 5 boroughs of NY

Bergen and Hudson counties in NJ

Many moved to create a new settlement in Conewago, Pennsylvania. There are still remains of the old cemetery there and the stone footings of the church.

The settlement was pretty much abandoned and they moved to the frontier of Kentucky (Mercer and the surrounding counties) where they built the "Old Mud Meeting House" which still stands today. (I have a book about it which has a list of those buried there.)

After a while they began to disperse to other areas of the country as they opened up.

    Good luck.
