Finding postal addresses and placenames in germany?

Question

I'm trying to find some thing like a gazeeteer or official list of placenames and postal offices in Germany and so far I havnt found the best comibination of search parameters yet ...alI have found is a hint the place I'm thinking for may be near Essen. I need to check this placename as I'm planning to use it in a story and dont want to get in trouble if there's a european or International copyright on it?

Any ideas ?

I was given this address as a good site to find people and their addresses and numbers, an online German phone book.
