Finding russian family records?

I was adopted and im trying to find family records...of any kind all i know of is my dad was Alexander Nikitin....thats it..

That will be extremly hard, because after the Sovietunion fell apart they threw a whole bunch of documents away and stuff, so do you at least know in what city he was born? And was Nikitin his last name or the first name of his dad?
