  1. Consider these locations.

    JAPANESE RESTAURANT IWATA

    (known for their blue crab)

    14423 Ventura Blvd

    Sherman Oaks, CA 91423

    (818) 386-1980

    BROTHER'S SUSHI (Excellent sushi)

    (818) 992-1284

    21418 Ventura Blvd

    Woodland Hills, CA

AHI SUSHI (Very good sushi & has a Zagat Rating)

    (818) 981-0277

12915 Ventura Blvd, Studio City, CA 91604

Each of these locations are very good.  Brothers Sushi has alot of write ups and reviews as well as AHI & IWATA. The ambiance at BROTHER'S is casual, but you won't go wrong with the assortment of very fresh and unique sushi that they offer.

TODAI is a Japanese all you can eat buffet, but very good & fresh if this is the type of restaurant you're in the mood for.  It's also on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City.

I can't think of an upscale fine dining Japanese restaurant (if you're referring to ambiance) in the San Fernando Valley area. However, I interprete this location as a fine dining Japanese fusion restaurant with excellent food  (But, it's in South Pasadena....if you ever have any opportunity, this is a must!...a little pricey, reservations is a must (it's a small restaurant)!....I've never been disappointed!):

    RESTAURANT SHIRO

    (626) 799-4774

    1505 Mission St

    South Pasadena, CA

Shiro has been there for years, excellent food, little pricey and alot of positive reviews Zagat ratings, etc....

    Hope this helps!
