I have recently been looking into the geneology of my dad's father's side of the family. Yesterday I asked about the surname "Molseed" (or possibly Malseed, Molsteed, or Maulstaid) in Ireland. In what area of Ireland are the names "Finley" and "Langan" most commonly found?

  1. Try putting the names into this online phonebook

  2. This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the names,

    Finley Name Meaning and History

Scottish: from the Gaelic personal name Fionnlagh (Old Irish Findlaech), composed of the elements fionn ‘white’, ‘fair’ (see Finn) + laoch ‘warrior’, ‘hero’, which seems to have been reinforced by an Old Norse personal name composed of the elements finn ‘Finn’ + leikr ‘fight’, ‘battle’, ‘hero’.

    Langan Name Meaning and History

Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Longáin ‘descendant of Longán’, a personal name probably derived from long ‘tall’, or perhaps from the homonymous long ‘ship’ (and so originally a byname for a seafarer). Sometimes Leonard is used as an equivalent.

    hope this helps.
