Finnish Challenge: Kristoffer Broberg wins in his second start on the Challenge Tour
Kristoffer Broberg won the Finnish Challenge on Sunday in his second European Challenge Tour start, beating Wil Besseling with a six-stroke margin at the South East Course at Kytäjä Golf.
Broberg recorded three birdies on the front nine to take an early six-stroke lead. Despite missing the par putts on three of the final five holes in regulation, he still managed to retain the same distance from his closest rival on the leaderboard.
“It’s an amazing feeling and I’m very happy,” said the Stockholm man, who earned €27,200 in prize money to move from the 148th spot to 29th in the Rankings. “I was confident in myself and I’ve been playing well this season, but I never expected a win on
the Challenge Tour to come so soon”.
“I wasn’t nervous at all today,” he added. “I felt very calm and knew that I just needed to play the same way as I’ve played the last three rounds. With such a big lead, I knew it would be difficult for the other guys to catch me”.
According to him, he was enjoying the best of his forms and is aiming to make it to the top-20 in the Challenge Tour’s money list, which will grant him a place in the 2013 European Tour season.
Before coming to the Challenge Tour, he was playing in the Nordic League and made eight starts this year. Among the seven cuts that he made, he never finished out of the top-eight and also recorded two victories.
Therefore, a victory in his second week was not a surprise for the game followers who knew his track record in the 2012 golf season.
He now has the privilege of playing each of the Challenge tour events scheduled this year. Earlier, he only had to depend on the sponsor exemptions.
On the other hand, Besseling also enjoyed his best finish of the current season. Yet, he was disappointed for not putting any pressure on his rival on top of the leaderboard.
Bjorn Akesson took the third position with an eight-under par tournament score. Further a stroke back was Peter Uihlein to capture the fourth spot.
