Fiona Shannon bags International Player of the Year Award in Dublin – Handball News
The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) Handball International Player of the Year has been bagged by Fiona Shannon. The award distribution ceremony was held in Croke Park in Dublin. Shannon, the thirty-two year old professional
handball player has won three world handball titles. Her first handball title came in the year 2003 followed by 2006 and the third one coming in the year 2009.
She has high hopes regarding her handball career in future events. Next year she will be participating in the world championships with the hope of getting another title. She is looking forward for the upcoming World Handball Championship.
The championship will be held in 2012. According to the reports from the Gaelic Athletic Association, the championships have been scheduled to take place in Dublin’s City West Events Arena.
The month of October has been chosen for the event. Shannon hopes that she can give another good performance and score goals for her team. She looks forward to the event in the hope to add a fourth title in her professional handball
career.
Talking to the media, Shannon was excited for receiving the International Player of the Year Award and also for the upcoming event in Dublin. She said, "I'm looking forward to the coming year and will take each competition as they
come as a build up to the world championships in October. Although my ultimate goal for 2012 is to win my fourth consecutive title, there are other titles that I want to win in the lead up to this and will use these as building blocks throughout the year leading
to the worlds."
In the category of Male All Star Player of the Year 2011, the award was given to Robbie McCarthy who plays for Westmeath, an Irish county. In the category of Female All Star Player of the Year 2011, the award for given to Maria
Daly. The players from Wexford, Colin Keeling and Barry Goff earned the Team Award while the Hall of Fame Award was given to Joey Maher. Liam-O-Ceallaigh and John Paul O'Connor who represent the Mount Talbot Handball Club was given the Club of the Year 2011
All Star Award.
