Fiorentina lose goalkeeper Sebastien Frey for the remainder of the season
Struggling Fiorentina have been dealt another devastating blow as they will be without 30-year-old goalkeeper Sebastien Frey for up to six months, which could keep him out of the squad for the remainder
of the Serie A season, the club announced.
After suffering a knee injury during a training session on Tuesday, the club released an official statement which read:
"ACF Fiorentina communicates that the diagnostic tests on Sebastien Frey have revealed a subtotal lesion on his anterior cruciate ligament.
"This means surgery is necessary to stabilise the knee and that will take place over the next few days. The prognosis for his complete return is between four and six months."
Fiorentina, who have had a difficult run in the Scudetto so far, currently sit sixth from the bottom with only nine points from nine matches and now have a much more difficult road ahead without their
starting keeper.
Their top striker, Stefan Jovetic, was also ruled out for six months earlier in the year with an injury. The one positive to add to the team will be the return of Romanian Adrian Mutu, who made his season
debut over the weekend when Fiorentina tied Catania 0-0, after being out for the last nine months since twice testing positive for a banned substance back in January.
With Frey out of the lineup, Polish goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who signed with Fiorentina over the summer after spending five seasons Glasgow Celtic, should be the man to step up and replace him. Boruc had
been unhappy since signing with Fiorentina, even threatening to leave the club in January, because of his lack of playing time.
Frey had been the starting goalkeeper for Fiorentina for the last five seasons making 173 league appearances for the club.
