The Viola have gone on to state that they are glad that the transfer of Berbatov failed to materialise, as the player failed to adhere to the ideology of the club.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dimitar-Berbatov-c11254 was all set for a move to the Serie A, with Fiorentina having agreed the fee for the Bulgarian with his club, Manchester United. However, the deal collapsed at the last possible minute, as interest grew from Fulham and Juventus.
Fiorentina were willing to pay Berbatov 1.4 million Euros per annum, and Juventus trumped those wages by offering him 2.1 million Euros annually. Interest from Fulham has grown as well, as the club has had an increased cash flow following the sale of Moussa
Dembele. Another factor for the move of Berbatov moving to Fulham has been touted as the fact that the club has Martin Jol as their manager, the man who bought Berba to the Premier League.
Fiorentina issued a scathing statement against Juventus and Fulham for ruining their bid for the striker. It was a bizarre turn of events as Fiorentina had already paid for the tickets of Berbatov and his agent to fly to Florence to finalise the deal. However,
he failed to board the connecting flight from Munich to Florence.
Viola went on to state that despite agreeing the fee with Manchester United, and paying the dues and financing the deal; the player made a U-turn on them and opted to stay in the Premier League. They mentioned:
“ACF Fiorentina announce that the transfer for Dimitar Berbatov definitively collapsed after an agreement with Manchester United had been concluded…. and after reaching a verbal agreement with the player over his contract.”
Fiorentina bemoaned the behaviour of the other clubs and stated that the clubs had behaved in a very unethical stance, and commented:
“This was down to outlandish and arrogant behaviour of other clubs, who have nothing to do with fair play and sporting ethics that go even beyond the confines of fairness.”
This also puts a big question mark over the character of the Bulgarian who was previously seen as a gentleman who complied with his commitments.
