Fiorentina will build own stadium as Florence city Mayor Matteo Renzi approves site – Serie A Update
Fiorentina are moving closer to achieving a landmark in their history – construction of a self owned stadium. The mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, has approved the location for the stadium to be constructed, suggesting an area that lies on the outskirts
of the city.
The Viola have been allotted a 40-acre plot of land north of the city, and the location is adjacent to the motorway and the airport. The area is known as Mercafir and is the location of the city’s old vegetable market.
While talking to the media and announcing the confirmation of the site, Ranzi said that completion of the stadium would be useful for both the football club and also the city. The mayor believes that it can be constructed into a multipurpose complex, which
would accommodate commercial, sports and other recreational activities for the public.
“We chose the area because it is scattered across 40 acres, with many warehouses that can be demolished and in addition to the reorganisation of the market, you can think of doing other things. The area can be used for other operations too. If it is possible,
you could use a solution that has the stadium, a sports centre, commercial spaces, offices and a hotel. We must think of the public,” said the mayor of Florence.
The mayor suggested that Fiorentina would benefit a lot from the project and the final product would meet the financial aspects of the outfit and the city as well.
“Fiorentina have all the credentials to join the project. It is an opportunity for all economical aspects of the city,” concluded Renzi.
The former club President, Andrea Della Valle, had abandoned the plan of constructing an own stadium. However, new president Mario Cognigni agrees on the need of a self owned arena and is looking forward to receiving a fruitful business plan.
Italian Serie A is one of the most competitive leagues in the world but clubs lack their own stadiums. However, the Turin giants, Juventus FC, inaugurated their ‘Juventus Arena’ ahead of the 2011/12 season, thus becoming the first Italian outfit to own a
stadium.
It is expected that many other Italian outfits would be following their footsteps in order to achieve financial stability, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 having already announced plans of moving out of Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
