Fire alarm is going off--?

I woke up 20 minutes ago and the fire alarm was going off.. my mom searched everywhere, there was no fire, the heat/air conditioning was off, but, oddly enough, the cellar light wouldn't turn on. About ten minutes later the smoke detector stopped, and came back on again. It came on a third time for about 30 seconds then stopped. Now the cellar light is working....i'm wicked scared, what could this be? please help- thanks. =]

btw- it's not possible that it was the battery, they're wired.

If you have Carbon Monoxide alarm installed at your house, it could be that.  And if that is the case, it is quite dangerous to be in the house.  Tell your mom what I just said.

For your information, you can't see, smell, or taste Carbon Monoxide.

right but the wires are only to each other.  all fire alarms have batteries in case the power goes out.

replace the batteries, if it doesnt stop. unplug it and get a new one

fire alarms can be triggered by more than just fire...

there's a fire alarm right outside the front bathroom in my house and if the bathwater is steamy hot, once the door is opened, the fire alarm goes off for that...

there's also one in the dining room and if you burn toast in the toaster, it will go off...
