  1. Before builders began using sheetrock in the 1950's all walls were plastered. The plaster has to stick to something. Thin boards (usually 1/2 X 2) were nailed to the framing and the plaster was applied to this. These thin boards are lathboards.

    Most fire codes prohibit exposed lathboard because it provides a perfect path for fire to spread
