Fire in Ruidoso Downs region threatens the community – Horseracing news
It has recently been reported that the fire that took place in the vicinity of Ruidoso Downs has caused a lot of damage to the community.
The fire that increased in its volume until Monday was largely fuelled by the wind blowing in the region. The high gale was able to spread the fire and increase its damage. Had it not been for the wind, the fire would have been controlled before long and
the damage minimized.
The damage that has been caused by the fire so far is huge if the area of the locality is taken into account. Up until now, five homes have been completely destroyed by the flames. Even those people whose houses remain standing have been asked to evacuate
their premises so that they can move to safer locations in case the fire decides to hold sway in the yet untouched areas.
Apart from the actual and potential property damage in the region, the people of the locality are suffering another predicament. The fire has been successful in disrupting the electricity supply to an approximate number of 1000 homes and businesses.
The Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino is also under threat from the fire that has not yet been controlled. In order to safeguard the lives of the employees of the racetrack and casino, it had been seen to that the evacuations were made on Sunday. If the
fire reaches the racetrack and the casino, it would damage the economy of the region significantly as the quarter horse racing held at the track brings in a lot of revenue to the community every year.
As of now, the fire has eaten away lands near the racetrack that span over an area of more than 2000 acres. Dan Ware, who is the spokesman of the New Mexico Forestry Division reassured that the racetrack has not yet fallen prey to the vicious fire.
He said, “As far as I know, there wasn't any damage to the track. Some barns in the area might have been damaged.”
Despite the fact that it has now been two days since the start of the fire, the reason of its occurrence is still unclear.
