Hi can anybody PLEASE help me with this. I have done an extension to my loft and I need to get the necessary certification for the work I have done in order to sell my house. However I was told that I need to get Fire-proofing for the two new cupboard doors in the loft that I put in. Can anybody tell me what this means exactly and what material I need to buy in order to get this done. Thank you in advance

  1. If you cannot fit FD30 doors, then the paint method or plasterboard, as previously mentioned should suffice. The trouble with plasterboard is that it deteriorates. A better material is a product called "Asbestolux" (Does NOT contain asbestos!), it is more expensive but the integrity of the construction will last.

  2. There are a number of ways of doing this - the easiest is to s***w plasterboard (a half inch layer should be sufficient) to the inside of the door, depending on what rating has been specified. Other options are intumescent film or paint but these are rather more expensive. If they are regular doors you could change them for flush fire doors which are rated - although the size of the door stops also becomes relevant.

Check this link (I am guessing you are in the UK) which should give you what you need to know and more besides and satisfy even the most tenacious Newham Building Control Officer.  http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads...

  3. There is a way of doing it with a fire proof material or lining boards, it depends if your doors are panelled etc.......you could contact your local fire safety officer through the fire service or local council.

  4. There are fire retardent paint and varnishes available, if you go this route leave the paint can on the site so the inspector can check it BEEN THERE DONE THAT
