Question:

FireWire Problem for MiniDV Handycam & Alternative to use i-Link enabled DVD Recorder for this purpose?

Hi All,

I have SONY DCR-TRV22E (MiniDV Format/PAL) Handycam.

Somehow, I am unable to connect my handycam to my laptop using the FireWire(i-link or IEEE1394 interface). It does not recognise at all. However it does using the USB, which is of no use for quality video transfer purpose.

I know the problem lies with Win XP SP2. I was able to transfer the video on a PC with Win XP SP1, but after upgrading to SP2, it stopped recognising.

Now, coming to the second part of question.

I wonder if anyone has tried it before.

I want to buy a HDD DVD Recorder with DV-IN(i-LINK) port and use as an alternative to transfer my video. Is the video recorded on HDD as original DV format (*.avi)?, If yes,How do I edit it? Do I need to transfer it to a PC as normal file transfer with may be USB?

Quite ambiguous, Isn't it?

  1. The videos will be recorded in a mepg2 format (*.VOB files)...resulting in a standard DVD that can be played by a set-top DVD player (and viewed on a television set).

To transfer videos to a computer, you would simply place the DVD in your computer's DVD-drive and copy the contents to your hard drive.  As for editing, some programs can directly edit mpeg2 files (e.g., Ulead/Corel VideoStudio).

For the Windows XP SP2 firewire issue, this patch from the Microsoft website may correct the problem:
