How much money does a firefighter make? / Whats a typical work day for a firefighter? / Any other benefits?

My brother is a firefighter.

Their salary and benefits will vary from location to location, if they are unionized or not, and even their seniority. Typical workdays do not exist. Most, if not all, work on shifts that vary, and if there is a shortage in any particular stationhouse in their area, they may be detailed there (at least that is how it is for my brother). For the most part, the benefits are more valuable than the salary with regards to medical, insurance, education, etc.

And finally, at least the reputation for being a firefighter is pretty good.   It's a noble profession, not meant for everyone.

I've seen starting salaries recently as low as 34K to 57K.

Most departments are on a 24 hr schedule, so you get to work and find the guy that you are relieving and he may tell you:  "we had a car accidents and used this or that, we had a small fire so you might have to repack hose today, and check the O2 bottle, we were low and had an EMS call."

After you get the breakdown you need to check your air pack everyday, make sure it's full of air and that the hoses are all good and your mask and regulator are okay, then you'll do some chores.  Depending on where you're riding that day you'll clean the toilets, mop, take the trash out, all the regular stuff.

In the morning you'll find out what drills you are doing that day or inspections.  Plan for lunch, go shopping, cook and clean up.  Read or watch TV in the afternoon, cook dinner.  

Throughout all your daily duties you'll be responding to emergencies, so anything may have to be pushed back.

Try to get to bed at a decent time.  Sleep with your socks on and have your pants and shoes nearby so when the tones go off you can jump up and slide the pole quickly.

Good benefits as far as insurance and sick leave/holidays go.
