Firewall question...very long..?

Okay, here it goes. I had Norton 360 2.0 installed on my computer (Windows XP). So something went wrong, and I had to uninstall it, when I re-installed it didn't let me open the main window...so I tried re-installing, didn't work again so I gave up on that. I tried downloading the Norton Removal Tool but my firewall wouldn't let me open that because it didn't allow FTP, HTTP & HTTPS or something like that...I thought the Norton Firewall was blocking it so I uninstalled it AGAIN. So, no Norton right now..but then I upgraded my Firefox and now it doesn't work..again because of the firewall. (I did check that it was on exceptions list.) THEN, I went to the Microsoft Update Website to see if I needed to update anything but once again, there's something wrong with the firewall. I don't know their is still corrupted files remaining from Norton and that's causing my firewall to block everything, there's so way for me to download NRTool to erase the stuff, and I don't know whether I should reset the firewall because then it might just block everything.......help???? please!

  1. Here is what I would do:

1.) check to make sure that everything that came from Norton 360 is uninstalled

    2.) Run this program:

    http://www.download.com/Glary-Registry-R...

    (free Registry fix, very useful)

    3.) I would reinstall Norton 360

    Optional

    <> 4.) run a comprehensive scan <>

You could probably switch 2 and 3 around, I don't think it would make a difference. Also I don't know if this will fix your problem, I do not know specifically what is wrong,  but it's worth a shot because it can only help you out.

  2. If you have a router, then do reset it back the factory default and everything then should work okay.  It won't make it worse or block more things.

Also, check your browser security settings with your IE browser and see if they're set too high.  I keep mine around 'medium-high.'   Also use the IE browser and re-visit the Microsoft Update site and see if that works after the reset.

    Good Luck!
