Question:

Firewire card does not fit the slim case of computer?

I totally understand that I need a firewire port to capture video. I have been doing it with USB with very poor quality results, and not knowing whether the problem was, computer speed, editing software, etc. After studying this forum/website, I have come to see the problem is the USB. So, I bought a firewire card, but my Dell is a slim case, so it wont fit. So I put it in my other computer where it does fit, but I have no software on that one nor a DVD burner. So, I feel totally screwed. I know I could buy a DVD burner, but am not sure what kind of editing software I should buy. I have Pinnacle and Roxio on the Dell, and the burner, but am not sure what is the best route. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  1. You can use the other PC to capture the video using any of the freeware capture apps (sorry, I'm having a senior moment - I can't think of any right now).  You can then network your PCs and transfer the video using FTP.   Once it's on the Dell you can import it and edit it with Pinnacle (Studio?).

You can capture with Windows Movie Maker, of course.  There's a list of capture apps at the link - WinDV and STOIK were the names I was trying to remember.

  2. Nero works very well & you can get an external DVD burner now for less than $120.00.
