Question:

Fireworks display for Scottish wedding?

We are getting married next June and our venue has ok'd a fireworks display on the hotel grounds, we've been looking at costs and it's going to be cheaper for us to buy our own fireworks and find someone to do the display ourselves, any suggestions as to who would be appropriate? I mean would I have to ask an off duty fireman (it's a VERY small village & the firemen don't stay at the station but are paged if they're needed, they're part time & called out maybe 6 times a year!) or would a relative be ok? Or someone else?!

Confused!

  1. I think you will find that the hotel will insist on someone who is licensed to handle explosives. My husband is an Army Officer with this license and he is always being asked! I would have a chat with the local Fireman, or contact the CO of your local Military base. Have a great time!

  2. As far as the safety is concerned, keep a few buckets of sand and some of water around the display area incase any sparks catch. I wouldn't think it would be necessary to have a fireman present, but check with the hotel. (It is Scotland too, the grass and plants aren't likely to be tinder dry!)

As for organising the display, (if that was part of your question), try asking at places like the RSAMD. They will have students doing things like stage lighting etc that will have done modules on pyrotechnics. I have a friend who graduated recently and works on the Glasgow Green fireworks displays etc. If nothing else, they may be able to put you onto a company that could organise the display for you, or onto a student who needs some more experience. That way you may end up with something a little more creative than normal home displays.

    Good luck and congrats!

  3. I would definitely go for the volunteer fireman.  In our town we have to have the fire marshal come by and inspect whenever we do any fireworks or pyrotechnic displays at our local theatre.  Check into this ahead of time so you don't get in trouble and have to pay any county fines, etc.  Have you considered giving out sparklers instead?
