Firing of Coach Jim Caldwell: Future bears witness to credibility of the Colts decision – NFL feature part-2
The future performance of the Indianapolis Colts will be bearing witness to the rightness of their decision of firing their head coach, Jim Caldwell.
Caldwell was released from his contract with the Colts by the team owner, Jim Irsay, on Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
The coach was sacked after Irsay had a prolong consultations with his new general manger, Ryan Grigson, and despite that the move had been seen in the making the departure of Caldwell have surprise many.
The owner defended the decision calling it a part of what he says the business of rebuilding his team with the next season on his mind.
Following the sacking of their vice chairman, Bill Polian, and his son Chris Polian, the Colts general manager, the owner went a step further in his business of rebuilding of his team and sacked the Caldwell.
In spite of the Irsay’s claim that it was a tough decision to be made, the coach has obviously become a scapegoat to their poor performance in the regular season.
This has happened despite that the coach has a 26-22 record. A majority of the losses were of this season, 14 in total.
He has helped the side. He helped the injury-riddled Colts side back on the winning ways.
The team with Caldwell in charge as a head coach won an American Football Conference (AFC) title, two division championships before ending up with the worst record of 2-14 in the past season.
Caldwell is the only coaching staff on the league who won his first 14 games as a rookie head coach. He also led the Colts to the league record of 115 wins in the regular seasons in the period of a decade.
His record apparently impressed the Colts. He has many fans of his performance. He was even more popular among the Colts players.
Many of the players in their post-Caldwell-remarks said they were shocked over hearing of the news of his release by the team owner. A number of them have spoken critical of the decision.
Irrespective to the fact, a number of commentators believe one bad season could not have shadowed so many positives of the coach.
Their forecast is that it was a poorly made decision. It will have negative recursions on the team in the longer run.
They credit the coach to have groomed the player like Peyton Manning to be a top class QB, and with the on-hand prospects of hiring of the new draft pick, who could be Andrew Luck, the team stands losing chance of benefiting another players as their future
QB.
Since the coach did not have a much say in the hiring firing matters, they believe the coach should not have been made a scapegoat to the team’s management failure to find and groom Manning’s replacement well before the past season.
They have spoken of their reservations in finding a right replacement for Caldwell by the Colts.
If they fail themselves in the efforts, the team can be derailed off the track in the longer run. They will need another Caldwell then to pull themselves together.
At the end all the business of rebuilding the team can go against the Colts.
The future will tell if they were right to have made such decisions as sacking of their head coach along the rebuilding course.
