  1. Piano: I'm not disagreeing with you, but what are "chagrins"?

I think it's legit. I went on this whole can't-be-real rampage when BD was leaked because I didn't think Meyer could possibly have published something that wretched, just to look like a fool for defending her. So anything's possible.

But Midnight Sun is much more interesting than the BD leaks. I think they were leaked on purpose to renew interest in the series and placate all the people (like me) who were absolutely turned off to the entire series by the trainwreck that was BD. I'm ashamed to say I think it's working.

  2. As an editor (not Stephenie Meyer's of course, but still), I think they're real, or an incredibly convincing and researched piece of fan-fiction. Every author has little "tells" - Meyer uses the word "chagrin" an unholy number of times, for instance. I caught myself finding similar "Hmm... It makes sense but I wouldn't say it that way" phrases that tripped me up in "Twilight" and the other published novels. These things are so subtle that they're hard to ape, but something that you find if you've been trained to look for them. And it's bound exactly like a first draft galley copy would be. Just because you think some of the lines don't sound like Edward doesn't mean they don't sound exactly like Meyer.

I think the pages being out of order is an issue of whoever scanned them. It looks like a rush job.

I have three guesses, without any evidence either way beyond my own professional judgment:

    1. It's a very, very clever fake - so much so that the person who did it deserves a round of applause.

    2. Some unscrupulous person at Little, Brown swiped the galley copy off of the editor's desk, or "accidentally" opened the envelope, realized what they had, scanned it quickly, and put it online, without the knowledge of the publishers. This has happened plenty of times before.

    3. Meyer's publicist, or Little, Brown, or Meyer herself realizes that "Breaking Dawn" was a huge disappointment to a fair portion of readers (the public outcry is almost unprecedented - who returns a book, even one they don't like?). In an effort to win back some fan goodwill, stir up the hype, get surreptitious feedback, etc, a decision was made by some of the key players to leak the chapters online and get fans excited again. Meyer may write "for herself" but Little, Brown is out to make money, and they aren't going to print a book that people are going to return. It's underhanded and even more unscrupulous than guess 2, but very possible. Look at how it stops just before that oh-so-crucial scene in the meadow - if you don't think Meyer's already written that part for "Midnight Sun," you're crazy. But it's not a part of the draft. For me, that seems very suspicious.

Anyway, I think they're real, but whether the leak was an accident or on purpose, we'll probably never know.

  3. It's legit.  It's a rough draft that's why it looks the way it does.

You can't tell me it doesn't read EXACTLY like Smeyer.  Because it does.

  4. They're the first 12 chapters of Midnight Sun. And I'm not sure which ones you were looking at, but the ones I read looked very legit. And I believed that they were Meyer's work. There were enough "chagrins" to prove it.

Edit: Amarillo, Stephenie Meyer uses the word "chagrin" six times in the first 12 chapters, and an amazing number of times in the other books. It's pretty much her trademark to not use synonyms.

  5. if you post the link i could read them and tell you

twilight is released (obviously) tho so its very possible that its the real thing just go buy twilight ... its really good :D

  6. I think she possibly means the first 12 chapters of Midnight Sun (I think that's what the book about Edward is called).

  7. Hi there. Yes, the leak of the first 12 chapters of Midnight Sun are legit. I know so because she posted it on her website. She's very upset that it got leaked and doesn't know when or even IF she will continue finishing the book.
