First 18 year olds car?

i will be getting my 18 year old son his first car and i like the safety of a 4 door saloon or in the us its a sedan im in the uk. what about a vw passat, ford mondeo or a vauxul vectra? also i was thinking of 5 thousand pounds that would be about 10 thousand dollars.i want him to have a safe car so he dosent get hurt.

VW's are great as well as Toyotas (Camry, Corollos) and Hondas (Civic, Accord).

do you have subarus in the UK? they have 5 star crash rating on all six sides in the US, are all wheel drive, hence they make a good all season car, and are quite good looking, and cheap

Do they have Toyota's in the UK? Because I have an 2004 Toyota Corolla and it's really safe; someone hit me and it was a pretty bad accident but I was okay and the car still survived! So if I was you I'd defiently look into a Corolla.

EDIT: Corollas are sedans; four door cars.

My first car was a ford explorer...a brand new one! This is out of the price range you are looking for so how about an escape?  Those are really sharp a bit cheaper, good gas mileage and safe car.
