First 2 years of Engineering school...?

Alright, I'm admitted into a college to study Civil Engineering. I am confidient that this is the engineering field for me. I just found out that the "university center" , which students can take generals in for any of the local colleges, has a Mechanical Engineering program. I am aware that the first 2 years of every Engineering field are the same curriculum because it is pretty much generals. Would it be possible for me to take my first 2 years there, then transfer to the specialized school for Civil Engineering?

P.S.: please tell me yes, because if this works it will save me upwards of $16,000!

  1. Depends on the civil engineering program at the university that you will be going to.

The school I went to the first 2 years were the same, but the school my son went too this isn't true.

  2. This is a very common practice in the US, going to a junior college to get your general education out of the way and saving a lot of money by transfering these credits to a university.  However, since the engineering classes tend to start in the second year, you would be delayed some.  Try and find out what classes can transfer, typically it will only be general education classes (math, science, history, language etc.) but not anything engineering related.

  3. Maybe.  But ask the specialized school if they would accept this.

  4. Probably, yes.

You really need to ask the people in the CE department of the school where you will finish your junior and senior year, if the classes you take at the local college are fully transferrable, or not.  Get them to give you all the details of all the requirements for transferring grades, and get it in writing.  You don't want to be 2 years down the road and find out they won't accept certain classes.

Get on the website of the university to which you will transfer and get the contact information for the CE department, then give them a call.  The secretary should be most helpful.
