  1. the cheapest 30-06 you will get is a salvage. i bought one last year and it is an awsome gun, its like 350.00 straight out of the box w/ scope had to do little shooting to sight it in.

  2. I just bought a mossberg 100 ATR, very good rifle. Was getting 1 inch groupings bench rested (Nikon Pro-Staff 3-9x40) at 100 yrds, which is good for me atleast.

I paid 400 dollars flat used (was used as a test gun at local gun store 6 rounds went though it). Came with the scope which is about 175 and a sling.

Just be prepared for a little more kick then your 30-30.

  3. Cheap is never the way to go on a firearm. You buy the best that you can afford, or the best that is available to you. The bad thing about buying a cheap firearm is that you do 'get what you pay for'. I personally would never consider getting a firearm that I did not believe had some quality to it.

I would make the following suggestion. A Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic. You can now pick them up for $399, they have a guarantee that it will group 1 1/2" at 100 yards. This info is being pulled off the site, just in case you want to know where I'm getting it. If you are hunting from a stand, this would be the way to go because it weighs 7 1/2 pounds. I have one myself and hate carrying the darn thing.

Now, if you are walking while you hunt, I would suggest what my grandfather uses, a Golden State Arms 30-06. They are VERY hard to find, believe me I've spent hours searching the web for other ones, but the good thing is that you can pick one up for less than $300. They are light weight, and have a full wood stock, unlike the Weatherby with its fiberglass stock. It is very comfortable to carry in the field, and my grandfathers get about a 3" grouping at 100 yards.

I don't know about other brands, but I have used both of these firearms. If you are making shots at long distances, get a Leupold scope with 3-9 zoom. I picked up my scope for $199.99.

Hope this helps, and hope that either is within your price range.

  4. Buy a Remington or Savage Brand, and use 180 or 220 grain bullets for harvesting Elk.* New or used with a 3 to 9 power variable scope.* Bolt action.*

  5. 30-06 is an excellent choice and in my opinion the most versatile caliber made.

  6. I'd look at the Remington 700ADL or 770, although Marlin and Mossberg make affordable bolt actions in .30-06 as well.  The -06 definately has more recoil to it, but I think you'd be fine.  Nevermind the guy telling you to get a .300 mag, that would probably break your shoulder, most adults say they are uncomfortable/hurt to shoot, so you being only 13, it would be a bad choice. good luck with your new rifle

  7. those .30-30s have killed elk for about 100 years now. You have to stalk a little harder ... even those old .25-35 Winchesters will kill elk.

If you really need a 06 shop around... a good used 06 can be had in the $300-$700 range in most areas.

I buy the best used guns I can find most of the time.. shop hard and the deals are out there.

Used Ruger 77's and Remington 700 series rifles are a good value and will last a lifetime if you care for them

  8. what about a .300 winchester.  get good at that, then in 5 years you'll be ready to snipe in iraq
