I have to write a paper about someone (not in our history books) who WE think stands the test of time. Like...after 20 years, they still have an impact on us. But it must be AT LEAST 20 years in the past.

Can anyone give me the name of the first (or a very inspirational) African American woman singer?

I know Bessie Smith...but I don't know if she's had a lasting impact on society.
