First Cross Country practice...?

Ok...I just started running about a month or two ago, and i had y very first cross country practice yesterday. It was at 3:00 p.m., and it was firggin HOT! They made us run 1 mile, hen 1.5 miles, and then they timed us on the mile. I was great right up to the time mile. I drank too much water before and received a GIANT stitch in my side. My mile time was 10:00. It was a big transition for me because i had always run in the evening and not during the heat. Should i be happy with my first XC practice? Was it good? Horrible?

Also, the coach and evryone is really nice, but could they possibly be wondering why i am on the team if my mile time sucked so bad? Should I reconsider doing Cross Country?

Thank you so much(By the way: I am very fit, weigh 140 lbs. and at noght i can run a 5k in like 24 minutes.)

  1. I'm a cross country runner and at my first practice last year i thought i was going to die. we had to run 4 miles and i walked atleast 2 1/2 of them cause i had never run before. but i stayed with it and my the end of the season i was a varsity runner. so dont give up and keep running. its hard getting used to running in the heat but your body will learn how to adjust. Drink water throughout the day and right before and during running just take eint sips of water or if that still upsets your stomach suck on ice. Good Luck!

  2. Keep going, you made a mistake but you can only grow from here...btw my First XC practice was today gl in your season!

  3. I guess it depends on your age, but good high school runners will be running 5k's under 16 minutes.

  4. You can't predict what the season will be like after one practice. Try not drinking so much water before, but you still need to be hydrated. If you start to feel a pain in your side, slow down on your breathing. In with your nose and out with your mouth. That should help you with the pain in your side

  5. keep with it the first one IS ALWAYS the hardest i think you'll be fine maybe if you can try getting outside and doing something when its really hot like a bike ride or a short run or just get out there to get used to it thats what i've done and it works well. dont worry about what they could think you've gotta know that everyone has a bad day once in a while and that was yours you'll prove them wrong later! keep with it! just make sure you dont drink too much before practice but dont drink nothing that will also hurt you! well good luck i hope you stick with it!

  6. You're fine...The heat is something you'll have to get used to, but you WILL get used to it.  Also, drink water throughout the day instead of just before practice.  Drink about a cup within an hour of running, but any more is setting you up for a cramp.  Start hydrating 4 hours before practice and drink at least 3 cups of water.  Running slow in your first practice is fine, too.  Eventually, you'll start getting faster.  Don't worry about it right now.  Don't have second thoughts about cross country, either.  It's a great sport and if you like it, you should stick with it!

  7. if you quit then youll never know what its like go for it i have tryouts for my cc team in chicago in 4days
