Question:

First D-SLR kit (On a budget)?

I was going to pose the usual "which camera?" question, but then it struck me; after I buy the camera, I'm pretty much committing to whatever lenses there are out there available for that specific brand. Having scanned lens prices for different brands, I've noticed that prices can get ridiculous. Regarding cameras, for a £500 budget it's all compromise. Some have built in IS but not so great IQ, others superior IQ but questionable size and built quality, and one I've seen even has weather protection but a c**p drive rate! So here's my question.

If I want to add a telephoto and wide angle lens to the standard kit, which brand is going to give me the best value for money for starters, and highest quality overall if I do choose to really get into the art?

I've tried to look for simple comparisons, but if I'm being honest what I really want is to know how much IS lenses are going to cost if I go for a Canon compared to, say, a sony or pentax selection?

  1. NIKON NIKON NIKON!

    Jessops....

    Nikon D40 + 18-55mm lens

    55-200 mm lens

    4GB mem card

£445.03 and £60 cashback (apply to Nikon) if you buy before 31st August!

  2. Canon IS lenses range from about $275-$11,900 USD....

You can get the Canon EF 28-135 IS USM for about $250 USD.  or the Canon EF 70-300 IS USM for about $400 USD.  The Canon EF 17-55 IS lens is about $275 USD.  When you get into the "L" series of glass the IS lenses begin at about $1500 USD.

There is a much wider array of available lenses in the Canon line of lenses.  Also if you opt for a wider lens f/2.8 many times you can forget the IS, it's not really necessary with such a fast lens.

  3. i would go for a samsung GX10 (same as the pentax K10) you can get one with an 18-55mm and 50-200mm for well under £500 pounds. the shake reduction is in camera so you can put any pentax lens right back from the 1970's on it and it will have shake reduction it also makes the lenses cheaper as you dont have to put shake reduction in the lens. it is well built and there are lots of other brand lenses that will fit it e.g sigma, tamron etc althrough cannon and nikon make the best top of the range camera's their amatuer SLR's are not as good IMO

£250. This has a 18-55mm lens as standard, and very good it is too, and will leave you with enough money to get a Sigma 70-300 macro, about £100, and a 2gb SD card or 2, and some rechargeable batteries, uv filters, and nd4 filters. Sorted.

I have the K110D. Same pixels, and if you want to see results, message me. I have also sold pics blown up to 50x70cm.

Forget the Nikon D40. Worst camera going.
