I have a dr. appt on Sept. 18th, i just found out that I am pregnant on the 18th of August so I figured that i will just keep the appt with my family physician and go then for my first dr appt for the pregnancy. I heard that it would be pointless to go earlier since they do not want to see you until u are 8-10 weeks pregnant. what should i expect, what should i ask i will be 8 /12 weeks pregnant at that time. and it is my first child. I am taking Folic acid for the past 8 months so that is covered.

Thank you all

  1. HI, I think its different for every doctors office, with my first I went in at 8 weeks and with my second (different doctor this time) they didnt need me in until I was 12 weeks. They did pretty much the same things though at each apt. I had to fill out a family medical history and they take urine and do a ultrasound ( either internal or external depending on how far along you are) They will give you prenatal vitamins and do the whole weighing and blood pressure thing. I also had to have blood drawn as well. At my doctor they also have nurses who speak with you and give you lots of information and talk about prenatal classes you can take. Anyways that was pretty much it. Congratulations!!

  2. Well you should probably let them know you are pregnant, they may want to refer you to an OB, or so they can be prepared to do an ultrasound at your appointment. They may let you keep your appointment or might rather do it sooner or need to reschedule to allow for more time to complete tests and what not. You are correct though that they want to find a fetal heartbeat which isnt normally visible until 8 weeks. Ask whatever you have questions about, things that are normal with pregnancy, or ask the things that could happen and should you need to call the doctor or go to the emergency room. I totally reccomend finding a copy of "what to expect when you are expecting".

  3. I went at 9 weeks.

I saw the midwife not the doctor (which I thought was weird but apparently I was too far gone to see the doctor and had to get booked in for my 12 week scan, therefore had to see the midwife).

At this appointment they took my blood pressure, felt my tummy, tested a urine sample, would have taken a blood sample but I am going to a hospital in Gateshead and the midwife works for Sunderland so I get it done at my hospital. Then it was mostly just form filling, getting a family history, medical history and pregnancy history.
