As I will be changing oil myself and first oil change should be after 600 Miles right? If I go into the shop and want to buy a cycle as I have my license already will a parent have to come with me? I was thinking of Paying in Cash or Check, Because I dont think my parents will be able to establish credit for me I am 17 and I have a job.

  1. Try to see if you can get it cheaper then that. Progressive quoted me at 100 bucks for a full year for a bike that size. I, am 20, however, and have had no accidents/tickets.

  2. If you have the cash, this may be a good opportunity to build credit.  Maybe a secured credit card through your bank.

The Ninja 650R seems like a good choice with its riding position for comfort, seems like it built handling.

If I were 17 and about to buy a new cycle, I'd be so excited I wouldn't be able to contain myself.  At least take your dad since he may be able to keep you from getting taken advantage of because your head is spinning.  It'll also go a long way to ease their worries.

  3. You should seriously thinking about going under the 6k bar. If you like the crotch rocket style you can go with the CBR 250, Ninja 250R, Ninja 500R. Ninja 650 is not a starter bike. But Eh! I got friends who started on a Yamaha R1 and they are still alive but remember that the faster and heavier the bike is, the less it will forgive your mistake! I started with a Ninja 500R, not looks as nice as a Yamaha R or the CBR but I had a lot of fun with it! Plenty of power, comfortable and easy to start with! You can googled Best starter bike and you'll find a lot of information on what makes a good starter bike!

Good luck and have fun with your first bike!

  4. The ninja 650 is a starter bike, it basically the replacement for the ex500, they just kept the ex500 in production as well for a cheaper bike. They do it all the time with the 600 SS bikes keeping around an older model at a cheaper price (zzr600). I've ridden a friends and its a good all arounder, with enough power that you wont become bored. Handles decently and gets up and goes.

  5. Unlike anyone who has post here, i do own and operate my '07 red ninja 650r quite often. This was my first bike and yes..as much as i had always argued with people saying that because i rode dirtbike a lot i wouldnt wreck a street bike ..i layed it over about 4 times in the first 2 months.

The wrecks were mostly my mistake..not having the kickstand all the way down or riding slow on a puddle of water trying to turn around.

The mistakes i made tho could have happened on any motorcycle though, so i still recomment the 650r as a starter bike.

  6. if you are only 17 you may have to have an adults name on the title.   Call the motorcycle shop and ask them what you need to do.

  7. Ck with your insurance agent befor getting to excited. a crotch rocket will cost you up to three time as much as a street bike to insure.

  8. Figure on mom and dad being their. Or turn 18 pretty quick. The Kaw ninja 650 is a good choice. It is a well tuned bike and more than enough power to get you over your head in short order. Just think with 2 beers you can make all 4 serious accident (fatal) requirements........

    1. under 25

    2. speeding

    3. first year on a motorcycle

    4. alcohol...............be careful.  Be sure to get an insurance quote befoire you buy the bike, it may surprise you.

  9. 17 Yr.s old.

    Totally self confident.

    Mounted on a hot 650.

You may know what to expect from the bike, but you'll

never know what to expect from the 'cager's.

Leave that ego at home son.

  10. The Kawasaki 650 Ninja is a nice bike, I like it

personally I would choose the Yamaha FZ6 or the Suzuki SV650 over it

why? cause the Kawasaki is made cheap, I don't like the heavy valve noise the engine makes, plus its not quick as the Yamaha.

    My Yamaha FZ6 is faster

  11. From what I understand, the Ninja 650R is a decent starter bike.  You have a little advantage because you have a little more experience on bike than most beginners.  The advantage with the 650R over say the ZX6 is that it is still a V-Twin cylinder motorcycle.  Much like your Ninja 250 and 500 are.  Between the 500 and the 650, there is only 13 horse power more in the 650.  I also think that the Ninja 650 is a whole lot nicer looking bike than the 500.  Another thing that you've already pointed out is the insurance.  Because the 650 is a V-Twin motor, it is still in the class bike with the 250 and the 500, also.  Therefore, the insurance is low on the bike.  Overall, the 650R is a great bike for someone looking to get into the sport bike class but, doesn't need all the horsepower that the supersports provide.  In my oppinion, Good Choice.  Have fun and be safe, always wear your gear.

Oh, I almost forgot.  Because you aren't going to finance the bike, I do not believe you need a parent with you to buy it.  If you walk in the joint with enough cash to buy it, they'll sell it.  Being that you've got a license already, that's just a bonus.  I don't think you even need it to buy a motorcycle.
